From the MH WOMEN’S TRAINING DAY, December 1, 2007:
Training Manual - This is a PDF of the day’s print material for the lectures.
Session 1: What is Theology and Why Do I Care? - Wendy Alsup builds the foundation for the day by clearly defining ‘theology’ as the study of God. She reminds us that any hope we have for change and transformation is rooted in our knowledge of God — that looking to His face to know him is our first duty and delight.
Session 2: God is our Father - Crystal Munson discusses the first person of the Trinity - God our Father.
Session 3: God is our Savior - Kelly Cowan teaches on the person and work of Jesus Christ.
Session 4: God is our Help - Amy Lockman shares on the Holy Spirit and His role in our lives as a comforter, counselor and helper.
Session 5: What Do I Do Now? - Wendy Alsup closes the training day with a teaching on how to practically apply knowledge of God into each life situation — taking every thought captive and making it conform to the mind of Christ.
From the MH WOMEN’S RETREAT 2007:
Confrontation and Restoration - It is no kindness to ignore sin in our loved ones. Deacon Danielle Blazer discusses how we can biblically give and receive rebuke.
From Gossip and Criticism to Giving Grace - Jonna Petry explains the ways our tongue can destroy friendships and ministries. How do we move from sinful communication to words filled with gospel-centered grace?
Communicating without Shame - Grace Driscoll teaches on our need for communication as a reflection of the image of God.
Soul Talk vs. Self Talk - Deacon Amy Lockman gives insight into the ways our communication even in ministry is often completely self-centered. How do we move past self-involved conversation to speak gospel-centered truth?
The Greatest Command - Deacon Wendy Alsup explains that the greatest command Scripture gives us is to love. It is a heart that is set on receiving and giving God’s love that will produce such fruit as patience, kindness, humility and other fruits of the Spirit.
From the MH WOMEN’S TRAINING DAY 2007:
The Journey from Sin to Joy - Grace Driscoll teaches on what it means to restore right relationship with God and others by walking through the steps of sin, conviction, confession, repentance, restitution, reconciliation and joy.
Who is Our God? - Deacon Amy Lockman defines what the Bible says about God being the ultimate Help, Helper and Servant and how his attributes affect our daily lives if we lay claim to them as truth.
Knowing God - Deacon Wendy Alsup follows up Deacon Amy Lockman’s teaching “Who is Our God?” and explains that knowing God as our Help and Christ as the suffering servant equips us in our role as women.
Romanticism - Kathryn Harleman poses the questions “What does true love look like? As women, are we truly desirous of godly, efficacious love or are we just chasing fireworks?” In opposition to our secularized expectations of love, we must consider how God has shown us His love through His Word. Laurel’s thoughts here.
Modesty - Deacon Wendy Alsup addresses the question “How does knowing God equip us in our appearance?” and explains that instead of following an arbitrary checklist, modesty is a serious issue of the heart.
Physical and Spiritual Adultery - Tonya Moi teaches from her own life about trying to earn love through her actions, whether sexual or through works in the church. Read the review here.
Gluttony - A heart-rending look into a sin that is commonly overlooked within the church, and inappropriately understood by the world. Crystal Munson teaches at the January 2007 women’s training day in Ballard. Read the review here.
OTHER TEACHING and SPEAKING:
The REDEEMING RUTH sermon series in its entirety. I can’t even begin to tell you how great this series was to listen to. And the video of the Scripture reading is pretty great, too. Preached over six weeks in early 2007 by Pastor Mark Driscoll.
Isaac Marries Rebekah preached 3.13.05 by Pastor Mark Driscoll
Jacob Marries Leah and Rachel Jacob seeks out his uncle Laban, who uses Jacob’s love for his daughter Rachel to manipulate Jacob into years of hard work and marrying both of his daughters. Then after his wedding night, Jacob wakes up next to Leah, Rachel’s older sister, instead of Rachel. (Is this a soap opera, or the Bible?) What is going on with these ladies? Read the review here. Preached 4.24.05 by Pastor Mark Driscoll
Jacob’s Sons Born Jacob is fruitful with his two wives who have a no-holds-barred baby-birthing contest. Reminiscent of grandmother Sarah’s sin, each of the wives get their maidservants to “help”. Jacob willingly goes along with these Jerry Springer episode-like antics. But throughout, God demonstrates His love, mercy, grace and faithfulness as the covenant continues with Jacob’s sons who become the twelve tribes of Israel. Preached 5.1.05 by Pastor Mark Driscoll
Jacob Leaves Laban After twenty years of working for his father in law Laban, Jacob wanted to return home to his mother Rebekah and father Isaac. Preached 5.8.05 by Pastor Mark Driscoll
Under Authority Like Jesus - Here it is - the 1 Corinthians 11 passage preached and ready to offend our culture… This one hits hard but is full of grace. Preached on 7.23.2006 by Pastor Mark Driscoll
Saved Through Childbearing It seems difficult to imagine a culture that hates children more than our own. Children are viewed as an enemy to be fought against and so an entire war has been declared on the wombs of young women. Preached Mother’s Day 2001 by Pastor Mark Driscoll
Maturity in Singleness, Pt. 1 - Taught by Deacon Amy Lockman, this is an discussion about the emotional, physical and spiritual battles faced by single women who are over 30 (or close to it!) and what a biblical response to these pressures looks like.
Maturity in Singleness, Pt. 2 - Wendy Alsup, Deacon of Women’s Theology, speaks on the importance of being in community with women in varying stages of life.
Women and Femininity, Pt. 1 Preached 01.06.02 by Pastor Mark Driscoll
Women and Femininity, Pt. 2 Preached 01.06.02 by Pastor Mark Driscoll
Women as Homebuilders Preached 01.13.02 by Pastor Mark Driscoll
Women as Wives Preached on 01.20.02 three times by three Mars Hill Pastors (click name to hear individual sermons): Pastor Mark Driscoll, Pastor Mike Gunn (now of Harambee Church), and Pastor Lief Moi.
The Feminine Mystique Preached 01.06.02 by Pastor Mike Gunn (Harambee Church). Read the review here.
Mother’s Day 2007 - As a special message for moms, Pastor Mark uses 1 Timothy 2:15 to explain that it is out of God’s love for His daughters that He sanctifies them through motherhood. Preached 05.13.2007 by Pastor Mark Driscoll.
Mother’s Day 2003 - Mom’s God Due to the sinful condition of the world in which women live, it is not uncommon to find them anxious about becoming or being a wife and mother. Consequently, it is important for women to see the hand of God governing their lives so they recognize that, although God works His will through them, it remains His work. Preached by Pastor Mark Driscoll
Abortion: Judy Abolafya’s Interview on KGNW Abortion recovery and ministry interview with Deacon Judy Abolafya. To read her thoughts, click here.
NOT SPECIFICALLY FOR WOMEN BUT FANTASTIC TEACHING THAT YOU SHOULD HEAR:
Resisting Idolatry Like Jesus - In this packed section of Scripture (1 Corinthians 10:1-14) Paul connects idolatry and sin for us, cleary showing that sin in our life proceeds from our idols. Therefore, before we can understand sin we must first establish some basic principles regarding idolatry… Preached on 6.18.2006 by Pastor Mark Driscoll
Studied by Scripture - This topical sermon by Pastor Mark outlines the basics of how we are to approach our study of the Word of God. We are not OVER Scripture, but under it. It holds authority over us and interprets our lives. We approach Scripture with our first question being “Who is God?” as the Scripture is God’s revelation of himself to humankind. See Adriel’s post on this here. Preached 8.10.03 by Pastor Mark Driscoll.
