Kitchen Table Cross-references
A blog entry with a title that includes the word “cross-reference,” is a sure fire way to lose an audience, so for the select few that have made it this far, the picture is dedicated to you.

Background: At the Ballard campus this week, Pastor Bubba preached out of John 15, one of my favorite and most sobering passages of Scripture.
On Tuesday night as I reread the passages, my mind kept asking, “I agree with this, but what does it mean for me, in Seattle, daily?” About the third time I was asking myself how to apply it, I realized that I had never stopped to research the small superscript letters peppering the pages, or truly dig into this theme of abiding in Christ. Reluctantly, I climbed out of bed and grabbed another Bible from the bookshelf across the room. With them side by side, I discovered what Bible scholars and seminary students have been geeking out on for the past 2000 years.
I am no Bible scholar by any stretch of the imagination, but I couldn’t help being fascinated as I began to see how often Christ repeats himself and reiterates this metaphor throughout Scripture. With the goal of sharing this discovery of you, I have written out the first section of verses, and found the cross-references through the ESV Bible Online, then learned HTML enough to put them here for you. It really is extraordinary what can be accomplished in a few hours while sitting at the kitchen table in pajamas.
John 15:1-11
“I am the rtrue vine, and my Father is sthe vinedresser.
2 tEvery branch of mine that does not bear fruit uhe takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, vthat it may bear more fruit.
3Already wyou are clean xbecause of the word that I have spoken to you.
4 yAbide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.
5I am the vine; ayou are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bbears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
6If anyone does not abide in me che is thrown away like a branch and withers; dand the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.
7If eyou abide in me, and my words abide in you, fask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
8gBy this my Father is glorified, that you hbear much fruit and so prove to ebe my disciples.
9iAs the Father has loved me, jso have I loved you. Abide in my love.
10kIf you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as lI have kept mmy Father’s commandments and abide in his love.
11These things I have spoken to you, nthat my joy may be in you, and that oyour joy may be full.”
Now that I have had a study of Scripture/Programming for Beginners session, I think I’ll get dressed and start my day too.

Reforming the Feminine Content
Thanks Hannan! This is such a great tool. Now I need to get out of my pajamas and get cracking. I am packing to move from Sammamish to Seattle. You may pray for me this week.
My computer could connect to the Internet from last weekend until Thursday this week when I was finally able to successfully trouble shoot it with Dell over the phone. But at CG when we were discussing John 15 I thought of “abiding” as having the ultimate wireless connection that never fails: Our glorious triune God, and choosing daily, moment by moment in all that I do to remain connected to Him.
Oops! my bad “My computer couldn’t connect”
Andrea,
That’s a great metaphor for abiding! I will be praying for you - for safe travels and a smooth transition. I understand the Dell connectivity issues too - my laptop screams for mutiny each time my husband changes anything with our wireless internet, then it sits and pouts for a few days. Welcome back to the info superhighway!
OK hannah - totally off topic, but the picture is wiggin me out! I recognize the Trader Joe’s basil plant, but is that really a table in your house? Is that what is at the window? It seems like the wrong view out the window, and I don’t remember your kitchen table being a sectional… am I smokin’ something?! help me before I go craaazzzyyyy!!!
haha
Adriel, maybe you need to come over more often!
No, you’re right, this picture is one taken of the apartment on Queen Anne I was living in just before I moved in April. Several days worth of hours were spent reading or writing at that kitchen window, resulting in great memories, so I posted it here…but you’re not going crazy, my new apartment and table are different…and my current Basil plant doesn’t look NEARLY that healthy.
Thank you for going through the effort to post the verses. Don’t know how I happened upon this post. I’ve been looking for an hour (!) for an audio for the Women’s Training Day and can’t find it. I downloaded Crystal’s talk on gluttony and she mentioned something about a handout in her talk and I’ve been trying to look for it. Can’t find her talk anymore—weird since it was just yesterday. At any rate, during the past hour God’s been telling me to just open my Bible so he can speak to me and forget trying to look for some handout. Stubborn me still sits on the computer determined to find it. And then there is the scripture you typed out…totally spoke to me. (I was at this sermon and it’s amazing how God showed me something different through reading the verses now then when it was preached.) Verse 3: “Already you are clean because of the Word I have spoken to you.” So many times I think I just avoid the Word, avoid being cleaned, and just sit in my rebellion. Anyway, long drawn out post to say, “thank you”. Now I’m off to really go open my Bible…I got the hint, God.
