Text & Context Conference this week…
This week Mars Hill is hosting the largest conference we have ever been a part of, the Resurgence Text & Context conference. We are hosting 1100 people from 46 states and 11 nations (including England, Denmark, Australia, Japan and Texas).
This morning I had the privilege to host a session, along with Joel Brown, on building missional worship bands. As promised, here are the resources I mentioned in my session…
Here are the slides I used.
Here are the notes.
Here is the syllabus for our band development process.
Here is a link to Bob Kauflin’s blog, Worship Matters, where you can find his job description for a worship leader. We have found this as a very helpful start for developing our own descriptions.
The audio from this session will be posted as soon as we can get it edited. Probably later this week.It is one of the great joys of my work and ministry to have discussions like what we had today. If we have been helpful please subscribe to this site as it is our heart to do anything we can to encourage and challenge others as we build the Church. Feel free to continue to ask questions here and continue the conversation.

Tim,
Based on teachings I’ve heard from you, Mark, Harold Best, and others, it seems clear that “worship” is expressed in more ways than music (although music is a common language, and therefore is widely and effectively used in this context). The natural conclusion then is that a “worship leader” does much more than just lead music, but uses music as one of the many tools, alongside prayer, scripture, contemplation, exhortation, communion, etc. So, I’m surprised that Bob would narrow the definition by specifying music as the main job of the worship leader (”by skillfully combining God’s Word with music”). I’m sure he would probably expand that definition in person and in his book, but I wonder why such a narrow definition up front?
Just wanted to say thanks for your time and availability this week. Truly an edifying time of discussion.
how do I snag a copy of the rain city hymnal? I didn’t have time to get it at the conference.
Pastor Tim,
I’m a worship leader for an A29 church in Spokane. I appreciated your session at the Text & Context conference last week, especially your comparison of “worship teams” and “worship bands”. We have been in the “worship team” rut for awhile and I would like to start moving in the direction of forming missional worship bands, however, we are a smaller church community of around 150 people and don’t have a large pool of musicians to draw from. Do you have any resources or practical advice/experience for a smaller church context? Thanks!
