Tune-age Tuesday - Marvin Gaye
The sickest jams that I have been kicking as of late are some staples I have Marvin Gaye, “What’s going on?’ and Michael Jackson “Off the wall’, “Thriller‘, and “Bad‘. “What’s going on?’ has become one of my favorite records in the past couple of years due to some fantastic songs (though admittedly certain songs’ lyrics are sub-par) combined with a very unique and beautiful sonic landscape. The older Michael Jackson records were done in a way that defined the eras that they are from, yet they have an incredibly timeless quality to them. Thriller, which I found out recently, is the greatest selling record of all time, has seven #1 hit singles on it, only one of which is a worthless waste of tape “The Girl is Mine” a duet with Paul McCartney.
The only recommendable new items on my list are a band called As Tall as Lions, with their self titled sophomore release; and Feist’s new one, “The Reminder’. There’s definitely some less-than-remarkable material on both of these records, but overall they have some great songs sung by some great singers.

Good ol’ Michael Jackson. I miss Captain EO at Disneyland. It seems kind of sacreligious that they removed that 3D-glasses bigscreen musical.
Have you seen The Wiz? OK it’s really slow, etc., but it’s classic; 1978 African-American version of the Wizard of Oz featuring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson to name a few… And I always liked the music, but that could be because I never lived in the 70s to be ashamed of them… http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1104039&BAB=M
“The girl is mine” looks as dumb as Monica’s “the boy is mine.”
It’s been a while since I’ve seen the Wiz, but it seems like it was pretty funny…BTW - ‘The boy is mine’ IS a total intentional rip-off of ‘The girl is mine’! Nice catch…

Wow. That’s all i can to say.
Let’s try this one more time…
Wow. That’s all I can say.
There - that’s better.
I couldn’t even get the ‘wow’ out… I barely could function to paste the link… then with macabre fascination… I watched them dance Sister Act too…
“a worthless waste of tape” — Nice.
I don’t know how the definition of ‘greatest selling record’ exactly breaks down, but the Eagles Greatest Hits (1971-1975) has sold more copies than Thriller in the US. Worldwide, though, Thriller has allegedly sold almost three times more, and it also has the distinction of not being a compilation, but a proper album.
I saw “As Tall As Lions” this year at SxSw at the AP (Alternative Press) show and although they are more than capable on their instruments, they were pretty boring live. Your recommendation makes me wonder who produced their album and if the songs are maybe more exciting than their live versions.
Feist is an amazing songwriter and The Reminder is one of the few albums I’ve purchased in the last year way outside of my usual tastes. I couldn’t get “1234″ out of my head after hearing it on The Mountain. I noticed that the production and songwriting on the rest of the album is kind of different from “1234.” A look at the liner notes shows it was co-produced with Ben Mink, a longtime collaborator and producer of KD Lang, among others. He really made that track shine.
Interestingly, I think that either I am noticing female singers more lately or there just happen to be a lot of great ones out there right now. See Regina Spektor, Rihanna. Anyway, the song that was playing on the radio this morning when I woke up also caught my ear, partly for the singing and mostly because of the arrangement. I was like who did this song, thinking that it was someone else newly discovered. It turns out the song was called “Sweet Escape.” The artist? Gwen Stefani. Her solo material may be underrated because of how disposable the later No Doubt singles became (’Hey Baby’ anyone?).
Dude - i love later No Doubt singles - in fact that album rocksteady produced some of their best singles , i think. But then again, almost all top 40 pop music has a disposable quality to it these days, doesn’t it? Interesting note on the co-producer of 1234 - totally shocking - i would have thought that some hip indie rock guy did it or something! KD Lang…wow! I’m also with you on the female vocalists out there right now…i’m lovin’ Amy Winehouse’s new one too.
