Meet Joel Fariss

I was raised in a suburb of Sacramento California with my younger sister and brother. I enjoyed playing outdoors and had an imagination that kept me entertained for hours as I played ‘army’ and built bike jumps. Throughout my childhood my family attended a small Baptist church although it wasn’t until I was 18 that I decided to make God number one in my life after getting involved in another church. I started helping in the college ministry and a year later was intricately involved and sold out. God continued to draw me close to Him and at age twenty I married my high school sweetheart Sarah.
A few months after our wedding I started a pastoral internship at our church and started seeking God and His call on my life. After an intense year of learning culminating in a mission trip to Africa, it was prophetically confirmed for me that I was called to be in ministry. I didn’t know what that looked like so continued to seek God for direction. It wasn’t long after I completed the internship that I felt called to minister in Seattle.
We started to get plugged in with the Acts 29 network and in August of 2007 moved to Seattle to plant a church. It turns out in God’s providence that the church I was supposed to minister to was Mars Hill downtown. I have been interning here at the downtown campus since January 2008 and absolutely love the Mars Hill community. We wouldn’t trade it for anything.
